Retaining Walls
A retaining wall in Palm Beach County is holding back saturated sand for several months a year, and what goes in behind it matters far more than what you can see.

What the job includes
- A compacted footing trench below the finished grade
- Block or paver courses set level, with whatever batter the wall needs
- Drainage stone and perforated pipe behind the wall, wrapped so it cannot silt up
- Geogrid reinforcement into the soil behind where the height calls for it
- Capping, backfill and cleanup
Water behind the wall is what brings walls down
Sand holds a lot of water in the wet season, and saturated soil is far heavier than dry. The pressure a wall sees in September is not the pressure it sees in March. Walls that fail here almost always failed because the water had nowhere to go.
That is what the stone and perforated pipe behind the wall are for. Wrapped in filter fabric they let water out at the base instead of letting it push. Left out, the wall leans, and it leans slowly enough that nobody notices until it is serious.
Height is where this stops being a landscaping job. Above a certain height a wall needs engineering and reinforcement into the soil behind it, and in Palm Beach County it may need a permit. We will tell you which side of that line yours falls on before we quote.
Seating walls and planters around a patio are the same construction at a friendlier scale, and they are the most common version we build.
Questions we get asked
Does a low garden wall need drainage behind it?
Even a low wall benefits, and in this soil it is cheap insurance. Above knee height it is not optional.
Can a wall double as seating?
Yes, and around a patio it is usually the best use of one. Height and cap width are what make it comfortable to sit on.
Do I need a permit?
Above a certain height yes, and it may need engineering. We will tell you before we quote rather than after.
Can it match my pavers?
Usually. Matching the cap to the paver field is what makes a wall look built-in rather than added later.
Often done at the same time
