Getting the shape right for a South Florida back yard

Afternoon sun is the constraint. A patio on the west side of the house is unusable from about two until six unless it is shaded, so we would rather move the seating area or build in a pergola than hand you a slab you avoid half the day.

Drainage matters more than on a driveway, because patios usually sit tight against the house. The fall has to run away from the slab and the foundation, and on flat lots that often means a drain line rather than pitch alone.

Patios are where paver size does the most visual work. Large-format pavers make a small yard read bigger, and a busy pattern in a small space does the opposite.

If the patio will eventually carry an outdoor kitchen or a pergola, the base and the sleeves for gas, water and power are far cheaper to put in now than to retrofit through finished work.

Choosing patio pavers for a South Florida yard

Patio pavers have a different job from driveway ones. Nothing is driving on them, so the base is lighter, and the choice comes down to how the surface looks and how it behaves barefoot. Interlocking pavers in a large format make a small yard read bigger and leave fewer joints to keep sand in. Tumbled and textured patio pavers hide sand and leaf litter better if the space sits under a tree. We lay full pieces out on site before anything is ordered, because a colour that looks right on a two-inch sample rarely looks the same across a whole patio.

Can you tie a new patio into an existing slab?

Yes, and it is common. The join has to be detailed properly so the two do not move independently and open a gap.

Do I need a permit?

It depends on size, location and whether anything is roofed. We will tell you what your situation needs, and HOA architectural approval is usually the longer pole.

What if I want a pergola or kitchen later?

Tell us now. Putting the base and sleeves in during the patio build costs a fraction of cutting them in afterwards.

How big should it be?

We lay it out on the ground with paint and let you walk it and put chairs on it. People almost always adjust the drawing once they can stand in it.
