Choosing between the materials

Four materials cover almost every job we do, and they are not interchangeable.

  • Concrete pavers are the workhorse. Lowest cost per square foot, the widest range of shapes and colors, and a damaged one can be lifted and swapped without disturbing the rest. Most driveways we install are concrete pavers.
  • Porcelain is dense, resists staining and holds its color under Florida sun. It suits modern designs and heavy foot traffic, and it costs more than concrete.
  • Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot, which is why it ends up around so many pool decks here. It is natural stone, so color varies piece to piece.
  • Marble is the most expensive of the four and it looks it. People choose it for entryways and pool decks where the finish is the whole point.

What an installation actually involves

  1. Excavation to the depth the application needs. A driveway carrying vehicle weight is dug deeper than a walkway.
  2. A compacted base. This is the step that decides whether the surface is still flat in five years.
  3. A leveling layer of sand, screeded flat.
  4. Laying, cutting, and edge restraint so the perimeter cannot creep outward.
  5. Joint sand, a final compaction pass, and cleanup.

What moves the price

  • Square footage, though the cost per foot usually drops as the area grows.
  • The material. Concrete pavers to marble is a wide range.
  • Demolition and haul-away, if something is already there.
  • Drainage. If water sits somewhere today, that gets solved before any paver goes down.
  • Access. A backyard a machine cannot reach takes longer by hand.
  • Pattern. Herringbone and other cut-heavy layouts take more labor than a running bond.
