What the job includes
- Removing the existing turf and excavating to depth
- A compacted base built to drain, which matters more here than almost anywhere
- Laying and seaming with the blade direction consistent so the seams do not show
- Fixing at the perimeter and around obstacles
- Infill brushed in, which is what keeps the blades standing up
Drainage, heat and dogs, in that order
The base has to drain. In a climate that takes this much rain in short bursts, artificial turf over a base that holds water grows the same algae and mildew as anything else, and it will start to smell. A properly built permeable base is most of the job and most of the cost.
Dark infill and dense blades store heat. In full afternoon sun turf runs considerably hotter than the surrounding air, which is worth knowing before it goes into a west-facing yard the dog uses at three o'clock.
For dogs both the base spec and the infill change. Standard sand infill holds odour, the alternatives do not, and the base has to flush clean rather than pond.
Blade height and colour are what make it read as real or read as plastic. A single flat green at a uniform height is the giveaway, so we would rather show you full rolls in daylight than a swatch indoors.

Does it get hot?
In direct afternoon sun, yes, warmer than natural grass. Shade, lighter infill and placement all help. We will be straight with you about which parts of the yard suit it.
Is it good with dogs?
It can be very good, but the base and infill have to be specified for it. Standard sand infill holds odour.
Does water drain through?
Through a properly built permeable base, yes. That base is what decides whether it works here.
How long does it last?
Many years with brushing and the occasional rinse. Seams and edges are where poor installations fail first.
