What the job includes

Choosing between the two, honestly

Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete, which is the whole reason it dominates pool decks here. Being natural stone, the colour goes right through, so a chipped edge does not expose a different colour underneath.

Marble is the more expensive of the two and it is what people choose for entryways and pool decks where the finish is the entire point. It is also softer, and it will show wear faster in a high-traffic driveway.

Both are porous. In South Florida that means iron in the irrigation water can stain them, and sealing is not optional if you are on a well. We will tell you which sealer and how often before you commit to the stone.

Neither is a good idea under a car unless the base is right and the stone is thick enough. We would rather put concrete pavers on the driveway and spend your stone budget where you walk barefoot.

Why travertine pavers dominate pool decks here

Travertine pavers stay noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete, and around a pool in August that is not a refinement, it is the whole decision. The stone is naturally porous, which is what keeps the surface temperature down and also why sealing is not optional if you are on a well. Colour runs right through the piece, so a chipped edge shows more travertine rather than a grey core. Marble is the more expensive route and it belongs at an entry or a deck where the finish is the point, not under a car.

Is travertine really cooler?

Yes, noticeably, and it is the main reason it ends up around so many pools here. Colour matters too, lighter stays cooler.

Does it need sealing?

In this climate yes, particularly on well water. Sealing also makes stains far easier to lift.

Can I use marble on a driveway?

We would usually talk you out of it. Marble is softer and shows tyre wear. Concrete pavers on the driveway and marble where you walk is the better spend.

Will the colour vary between pieces?

Yes, that is natural stone. We blend across the field as we lay so the variation reads as texture rather than patches.
