Shade angle and wind, the two things that decide the design

Shade is a function of the sun's angle, and in South Florida that angle is high. A pergola with widely spaced slats gives almost no shade at midday. Louvre spacing and orientation are what decide whether you get relief at two in the afternoon or only at five.

Wind load is the serious part. Anything with a roof on it in this county has to be anchored for hurricane-season wind, and that is a footing question rather than a bolt question.

Materials behave differently near the coast. Untreated timber and cheap fixings do not last in salt air. Aluminium and marine-grade fixings do.

Almost every pergola sits on something. Putting the base and the post footings in during the patio build is dramatically cheaper than cutting them into finished pavers later.

It has to be built and anchored for the wind load, which means proper footings. That is exactly why we would rather do footings during the paver work.

How much shade will it actually give?

It depends on slat spacing and orientation. Tell us what time of day you want to use the space and we will design to that rather than to a catalogue picture.

Do I need a permit?

Usually yes for a fixed structure, plus HOA approval. We will tell you what applies.

Can you build over an existing patio?

Often, if the slab and footings can take it. We will look before promising.
